Muskegon Public Schools superintendent Jon Felske believes the district needs to cut approximately $7.2 million from its budget next year to be out of its deficit within the two years mandated by the state.
Superintendent Jon Felske claims funds are withheld by the State of Michigan when students switch districts. Referring to them as “transient students”, he noted these students might move mid-week and miss several days of school between leaving one district and starting at another.
What’s next? Muskegon Heights can request a hearing with the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan. If a hearing is requested, it will happen on April 18, 2012, at 10:00 A.M. in Lansing. After that hearing, the Governor will appoint an emergency financial manager. Who that might be is not apparent at this time.
