Mark Anthony Thomas of City Limits (NYC) discusses Obamacare

Mark Anthony Thomas is the Director of City Limits, overseeing the news organization’s operations and development. He previously served as the Deputy Director of City Futures, the parent organization of the public policy think tank, Center for an Urban Future.

Mark began his professional career with Georgia-Pacific Corporation’s foundation, managing the company’s successful Partners for Education programs, administering sponsorships and community engagement, and developing communications strategies of the foundation’s philanthropy. Through GP, now a subsidiary of Koch Industries, he served on committees and boards for Central Atlanta Progress, the Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violence, the Atlanta Community Foundation, and served as an aide to executive committees renaming Atlanta’s International Airport and launching multiple public-private civic initiatives in the city. He is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta’s LEAD Class 2006 and served from 2004 until 2010 as the President of the Board of Directors of Helping Teens Succeed, a project funded by the Federal Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

He has served on boards of directors for the University of Georgia Alumni Association and the Center for African American Male Research Success at West Georgia University and led projects for the Southern Regional Council and the National Center for Black Philanthropy. As a communications professional, he has overseen 10 web development projects and served as a presenter on web communications trends. In 2010, he was invited to the White House’s Online Summit for leading African American programming leaders in the news media and currently serves on the New York steering committee for the Online News Association.

He received his MPA-Financial Management from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and graduated from the University of Georgia, where he served as a writer and the Editor-In-Chief of the school’s daily newspaper, The Red & Black. He has been prominently featured in Time Magazine in 2000, received a 2003 Hull Fellowship by the Southeastern Council on Foundations, recognized by Essence Magazine as one of the 50 Do-Right Men of the Year in 2006, ranked #7 on AUC Magazine’s Top 30 Under 30 in Atlanta in 2005 and featured on NBC’s Atlanta Affiliate as a “Future Leader of Tomorrow.”

Mark is also the author of two poetry books and was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year-Poetry in 2005. He has spoken and written works for conferences, schools, causes, and events across the country.

He developed the strategic plan to re-launch City Limits in 2009 and lives in Harlem.
