From MLive: Muskegon Museum of Art to showchase African American art from private collection

MUSKEGON, MI – Works by more than 30 of the most significant African American artists from the past 150 years will be on display at the Muskegon Museum of Art, starting Thursday, Sept. 12.
The exhibition, “Promises of Freedom: Selections from the Arthur Primas Collection,” will feature 75 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper, graphics and documents, all collected from the private Arthur Primas Collection.
The earliest works in the collection date back to about 1802. It then tracks the development of African American art through the 1920s and 1930s with the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and today’s contemporary art scene, according to a press release about the event.
